Clark Humanities Museum

The goal of the Clark Humanities Museum, which opened in 1970, is to give students the crucial opportunity to engage directly with original works of art and other artifacts of material culture related to their courses鈥攁n irreproducible experience that sharpens critical inquiry, fosters interdisciplinary thinking, and offers the keen poignancy of authenticity in our increasingly virtual digital age.

The Mizrahi Jews: 3,000+ Years of Jewish Culture in the Middle East

This exhibition highlights the experience of indigenous Jewish communities across the Middle East and surrounding areas. In America, people tend to equate Jewry with the European diaspora. This often leads to a misconception of Jews as outsiders to the Middle East. But 鈥淢izrahi鈥 (鈥淓astern鈥) Jewish communities have existed in the Middle East for thousands of years, even through successive colonization by various empires. Today Mizrahi Jews make up over half of Israel鈥檚 Jewish population and are an integral part of global Jewry throughout the diaspora.

The photographs and artifacts displayed delve into the history and culture of the Jewish communities of Morocco, Tunisia, Ethiopia, the Levant, Yemen, Iraq, Iran, Central Asia, and Afghanistan. Many individuals featured here have fled persecution or were forced out of their countries of birth, as the firsthand accounts illustrate.

As you interact with the space we encourage you to think through the 3,000 or more years of indigenous Jewish cultures in the Middle East.
