ϲʿ¼’s Day of Giving, our annual 24-hour virtual fundraising event, launches Wednesday, March 22 on our GiveCampus site at ! Thanks to an anonymous donor, the all early donations made between March 9 and March 22 will be matched 1:1 up to $10,000. This year’s call is simple: Support what you love at Scripps.
“Whether you’re an alum, family member, faculty, staff, or friend, you’ve had a unique experience with Scripps that can reflect where you give,” says Karina Chappell, director of leadership annual giving and The Scripps Fund. “Whether it’s to preserve the beauty of Denison Library, support CMS Athletics, advance diversity through scholarships, or something else, you get to choose.”
Gifts Make a Difference on Day of Giving—But So Does Advocacy
While gifts are essential to helping Scripps provide resources our students deserve, Day of Giving is bigger than fundraising.
“There’s this assumption that philanthropy belongs to those who have a lot of money to give away, like a Mackenzie Scott or Melinda Gates,” says Chappell “but it’s simply actions that improve the lives of others, including our students. In that way, philanthropy belongs to all of us.”
People are 44 percent more likely to give when asked by a peer or someone they know, adds Chappell, making advocacy just as valuable as making a donation—especially on behalf of one of the few remaining US colleges that centers women’s perspectives.
In addition or as an alternative to giving, Chappell notes that you can participate as a Day of Giving advocate and spread the word about the campaign online. The GiveCampus site even gives advocates the ability to to share your personal reason for supporting Scripps.
Supporters can also —an ideal option for those who want to motivate peers, like members of their class year, to join in.
This mix of financial support and advocacy can be electric, positioning Scripps as an incubator tomorrow’s problem solvers. After all, says advocate Darcie Giansante ’03, inventing solutions is a Scripps hallmark.
“Scripps alums and students are not just out for themselves—they ask ‘What is a better way?’” she says. “That’s what makes me want to stay involved!”
