This fall, Sarah Budischak joined the faculty of the W.M. Keck Science Department as an assistant professor of biology. She is an ecologist who studies infectious disease鈥攕pecifically, how different environmental contexts affect organisms’ responses to parasitic infection. This exploration has brought her into close contact with worms, mice, and free-ranging African buffalo. We spoke with her about the origins of infectious disease, how parasites compete for resources, and a club called the Parasite Ladies.

Visit the Claremont Museum of Art (CMA) this fall, and you will encounter a lively menagerie: mermaids glide in crystalline waters, horses gallop across rolling foothills, and cats impishly peer out at passersby. The exhibition Primal Nature: Animalia by Women in Post-War Claremont features fauna of various stripes and feathers represented in a variety of media鈥攆rom sculptures in bronze, clay, and wood to watercolor paintings to wool fiber needlework鈥攁ll by Claremont women artists, including several Scripps alumnae.
