Class of 2016: Fulbright Recipients Delighted to Teach Abroad
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program has awarded grants for five °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±¼Ç¼×ÊÁÏ students to participate in English Teaching Assistant Programs abroad in the coming year, two in Malaysia and one each in Mexico, Germany, and Mongolia. “Fulbrighters” Grace Dahlstrom ’16, Aishwarya Subramanian ’16, Xitlaly Sanchez ’16, Halay Wilhelm ’16, and Zoe Dilles ’16 will meet, work, live with, and learn from the people of their respective host countries, interacting on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and in routine tasks.

Since 1931, Scripps’ graduating seniors have participated in what has become an essential rite of passage at the College: the signing of Graffiti Wall. Each year, seniors choose a mural design from student-submitted illustrations to paint on the wall, and then the entire graduating class adds their signatures. The Graffiti Wall is a visual reminder of Scripps’ history and reflects the changing tastes and interests of students over the decades.

°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±¼Ç¼×ÊÁÏ’s 86th annual Commencement takes place on Saturday, May 14 at 5:00 p.m. on Elm Tree Lawn. Interim President Amy Marcus-Newhall will preside over the ceremony, and Madeleine K. Albright, 64th U.S. Secretary of State, will give the commencement address. This year, 206 seniors will cross the stage to receive their diplomas.

Michelle Ozaki ’16 didn’t have to travel far from her hometown of Pasadena, California, to find what she was looking for in a college. She always knew she wanted to be a science major, but she also wanted a close community, small classes, and a beautiful campus. She chose Scripps because it had it all and more—including a collaborative and supportive classroom environment and state-of-the-art research facilities for the biology major.

As the first in their family to attend college, Ontario, California, natives Juliana and Daniela Canas Baena immediately felt the strong support of their first-generation peers at Scripps. Before beginning their first year at the College, the twins participated in the First-Generation@Scripps program, which allowed them to connect with fellow first-years, staff, and professors who identify as first-gen or first-generation-student allies, and first-generation sophomores, juniors, and seniors who served as mentors throughout the year.

Scripps seniors Victoria Montecillo ’16 and Katie Marcus Reker ’16 are double majoring in media studies and theatre, which means they must complete a thesis project in each subject in order to graduate. For their theatre theses, they chose to star in Urinetown (2001), the Tony Award–winning musical that satirizes capitalism, the legal system, and classic Broadway musicals.
