Signature Programs
The Wellness Room
The Tiernan Field House provides a space focused on overall mental and emotional health with easy access to health and wellness supplies.
Peer Health Educators (PHE)
Peer health educators support our students’ holistic wellness needs. Signature PHE-led programs include Mindful Mondays, Tasty Tuesday, Destress Thursday, and more.
Mindful Mondays
Mindfulness meditation is a mental training practice that teaches you to slow down racing thoughts, let go of negativity, and calm both your mind and body. It combines meditation with the practice of mindfulness, which can be defined as a mental state that involves being fully focused on “the now” so you can acknowledge and accept your thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judgment. During Mindful Mondays, students learn mindful meditation techniques that offer various physical and psychological benefits, including stress reduction, improved mental health, and emotional regulation.
Tasty Tuesdays
For many college students, it is their first time being away from home and being on their own. This can come with the challenge of ensuring that students are getting balanced, nutritious meals. Also, late-night studying can be met with fast-food runs and plenty of sugary snacks, which are great in moderation but can cause concern when not paired with more nutritious food options. Evidence shows that many college students have poor dietary habits and low activity levels, which can be mitigated by learning about nutrition.ÌýThe Tasty Tuesdays program was created as a way to show college students different snacks and meals they can easily make and that are nutritious and balanced. Students attend a biweekly session to learn new balanced recipes they can incorporate into their diets.
SRH Wellness Wednesdays
Sexual health education provides students with the knowledge and skills to help them stay healthy, and free of infection and unintended pregnancy. Comprehensive sexual health education encompasses other areas of well-being, including healthy relationships (e.g., our relationships with friends, family, and romantic partners; understanding consent; setting boundaries) and sexuality (e.g., supporting the inclusion of diverse sexual orientations; addressing gender norms). Peer Health Educators provide health education to the campus community on STI’s, contraception methods, and barrier methods. Programs engage students in interactive presentations, events, and workshops on topics related to safe sex and healthy relationships.
A special program is the Condom Canary program where students can ask for and supplies they need, and a Peer Health Educator packages them up and sends it to their mailbox so that students always feel prepared with what they need. An average of 10 students utilizes the Condom Canary program weekly.
Destress Thursdays
Stress is a natural human reaction that happens to everyone, especially college students. Stress can be positive as it can motivate us to complete certain tasks. However, long-term stress, also known as chronic stress, can lead to many health issues affecting the immune system, digestive system, cardiovascular system, and reproductive system. Stress can also put students at higher risk of developing a mental health condition, like depression or anxiety. Destress Thursdays are designed to relieve and prevent chronic stress among Scripps students. Biweekly programming focuses on destressing activities, such as movie nights, craft nights, and going on walks with dogs.
Feel Good Fridays
Feel Good Fridays were designed as a program to support students in learning about the harmful effects of diet culture on body image, breaking out of diet culture, and feeling good in one’s body no matter its size, shape, color, etc. Diet culture is particularly harmful to college students who are constantly exposed to society’s expectations of our bodies through social media. Diet culture is a social expectation that tells us how we should eat and look and that if our bodies look a certain way – we are more accepted. Diet culture is dangerous and could harm people of all sizes, sex, and age.ÌýTo mitigate the harmful effects of diet culture, Feel Good Fridays incorporates a combination of creative and dynamic programs, workshops, and events centered around topics on balanced eating, body image and eating disorders, and sleep health. Some of these programs include Southern Smash and Body Compassion week to foster compassion for one’s body no matter what stage it is currently in.
Party Like a Scrippsie
Drinking culture is highly prevalent among Scripps students. Some have been drinking since their young teenage years, some have their first drink as a freshman, and some choose not to drink at all. The Party Like a Scrippsie program was designed to cultivate a safer drinking culture on campus through social norming and conducting outreach to educate fellow students on the short-term and long-term effects of alcohol, marijuana, and other drug consumption and abuse.
FitScripps
The popular FitScripps program offers a wide-range of classes, so we have something for everyone! From Yoga to Kickboxing to Zumba, every class offers a supportive environment where participants can be active and make friends in the process.
Fresh Check Day
The Field House hosts an annual Fresh Check Day, an uplifting mental health promotion and suicide prevention event where students are encouraged to engage in dialogue about mental health and get connected to available mental health resources. Students learn about suicide prevention and how to help others in need by learning about the signs to look out for.
Be Well Fridays
The Field House hosts a wellness fair that focuses on supporting students’ holistic wellness. TFH Peer Health Educators provide personal health and wellness assessments the last Friday of each month where students may evaluate their levels of emotional wellness, analyze their personal behaviors, and more. In addition, the Field House provides therapy dogs so students may de-stress, socialize with friends, and pet some cute dogs.
Body Compassion Week
Tiernan Field House, in collaboration with other campus partners and community members, hosts an annual Body Compassion Week, a special series of events dedicated to celebrating and embracing body positivity and self-love. Throughout the week, students explore ways to foster a healthy relationship with their bodies, break free from diet culture, and cultivate compassion for themselves and others. Activities include interactive workshops, mindful movement sessions, inspiring guest speakers, and opportunities for personal reflection and growth. We come together to redefine beauty standards, honor our unique journeys, and build a supportive community that champions self-acceptance and well-being. Embrace your body, celebrate your uniqueness, and join us for a transformative week of compassion and connection.
Flick n’ FloatÌý
In collaboration with OSE, Tiernan Field House hosts a Flick n’ Float each semester. Students can enjoy snacks and enjoy a movie while floating in the pool or hanging out by the pool side. It is a fun way to destress and get to know others!
