First-Year Students Build Community through IMPaCT, Mellon-Funded Pilot Program to Launch in August

In May 2017, Scripps was awarded a three-year New President’s Grant to support an initiative of the president’s choosing to further a project or area of importance to her. Scripps President Lara Tiedens has allocated the funds to a new pilot program for incoming students called IMPaCT (Impacting, Partnering, and Changing Together).

Laspa’s Center for Leadership: Women and Congress Seminar

During this year’s spring break, 11 Scripps students traded their swimsuits for business suits. Through the Alternative Spring Break program, funded by Scripps’ own Laspa Center for Leadership, participants flew to Washington, D.C., to attend a Women and Congress seminar sponsored by the Public Leadership Education Network, a national organization focused on preparing college women for leadership roles in the public policy arena.

The Scripps Experience: Women’s History Month: Programming Celebrates Leadership in Action

As a women’s institution, °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±¼Ç¼×ÊÁÏ constantly celebrates female leadership, empowerment, and achievement. Yet March, marked by Women’s History Month, calls for extra attention. Since the month’s designation in 1987, Scripps has honored women’s contributions to history and society through additional programming and events. This year, students had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., to attend a Women and Congress seminar; lunch with women composers who are breaking new ground; listen to Opal Tometi, CEO of Black Alliance for Just Immigration, speak about racial justice; and to learn about sustainability through a feminist lens through SCORE’s Sustainability Series.

The Scripps Experience: The Scripps-in-Residence Program

Scripps’ annual Scripps in Residence program— now in its third year—has hosted distinguished alumnae and parents on campus to share their professional journeys as well as offer wisdom and advice about blazing a career path. Typically held over three days in October, the program offers an array of opportunities for Scripps students to hear from guests, including discussion panels, lunches, browsing room chats, and one-on-one informational interviews. For students who are beginning to think about their post-graduation pursuits, Scripps in Residence can help bring clarity and insight to setting oneself up for those next steps.

Laspa Center for Leadership: Mikaela Gallardo and Elizabeth Galvan: Developing Resources for Elementary School Students in Nicaragua

In Bluefields, Nicaragua, a city along the Caribbean coast, rapid economic growth has improved the standard of living and increased the demand for education. Although the number of schools in Nicaragua is growing, public institutions are overcrowded and often inadequate, and many families cannot afford to send their children to private institutions. To help address the problem of children’s access to education, Mikaela Gallardo ’19 and Elizabeth Galvan ’19 used Laspa We Act Grants to work with Path of Knowledge, an organization that awards private-school tuition scholarships and provides educational support for Nicaraguan students and their families beyond the classroom.

Laspa Center for Leadership: We Act Action and Research Grants 2017 Recipients Announced

The Laspa Center for Leadership at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±¼Ç¼×ÊÁÏ has awarded five We Act Action and Research Grants for 2017. Each student recipient will execute a yearlong, self-designed project to “transform knowledge, passion, and ideas into action, demonstrate creative and effective problem-solving, create partnerships in the public or private sector, and produce outcomes that make a positive impact.”

Laspa Center for Leadership: An Alternative Spring Break: Scripps Students Meet with Bay Area Business Leaders and Creatives

Our group of 10 students drove six hours from Claremont to San Francisco to reach our beautiful Airbnb, a Victorian penthouse apartment located in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. Many of us, being Southern Californians, felt glad to be on the trip because we finally got to see the famous city.

Laspa Center for Leadership We Act Grants: Grace Reckers ’18 Is Advocating for Economic Justice in the U.S. and Abroad

This past summer, Grace Reckers ’18 pursued her interests in public health and workers’ rights beyond her Scripps classes, conducting research, participating in outreach and education programs, and learning about nonprofit work in Cuba and Los Angeles. The public policy analysis and biology major used her Laspa We Act grant to travel to Havana for five weeks to work for the El Centro Martin Luther King (CMLK) on improving public access to healthcare. Upon her return, she spent the remainder of her summer assisting the Los Angeles-based Koreatown Immigrant Workers Alliance (KIWA) with a community health education project.
